Beerlicious Inc. has combined the three blissful B’s of Beach, BBQs and Brews, to create a Father’s Day weekend full of things that dads love most: Barbecues, Beer, Meat and Music. The Beach, BBQ & Brews Festival has been taking over Woodbine Park for 5 years now and has the neighbourhood buzzing. This free outdoor festival brings together some of the best ribbers in North America in a 3-day showcase of tender ribs, juicy pulled pork sandwiches, beef brisket and much, much more.
The event changed its name from Beach Ribfest to Beach BBQ and Brews in 2010 because the founders felt it was becoming so much more than just a Ribfest. The growing barbecue movement has led aficionados to get even more creative with their cues. The focus is no longer solely on ribs, but on all kinds of grilled food. Grilling has become an art and popular pastime for chefs and amateurs alike and we have begun to see some serious innovation – last year the festival featured a pulled-pork ice cream cone! Coming from a stove-top and oven-obsessed kind of family, the idea of cooking anything other than a steak on a grill is alien to me. But these experts grill everything from fish to fruit and are pros in combining the right rubs, spices and sauces to create a masterpiece.
The festival has taken this booming barbecuing movement to another level by showcasing the latest creativity in its weekend-long grilling competitions. Friday’s Grilling Tent competitors are the Toronto Firefighters who will compete to see which division is the best at the art of grilling, while Saturday’s competitors are the pros. Local and celebrity chefs, such as Toronto’s own Ted Reader, come out to show off the best of their barbecuing talent. Finally, on Sunday, the amateurs among us come out and try our tongs at making the tastiest treats. The participants are judged on the originality and taste of their creations, unfortunately, bystanders don’t get to taste test.
Not a fan of meat? Have no fear, this free festival brings much more to the table…and to the taps. In its Beer & Beverage Garden, the festival hosts some local brewers and their refreshing brews. Since the event functions to kick off Ontario Craft Beer Week, a province-wide celebration of our artisanal beer, some of the best brews will be pouring. And, as a step-up from last year, the entire park is licensed! So craft beer enjoyment is no longer contained to the beer garden alone. You can grab a beer, a rack of ribs, and mosey on over to see the band play or head over to the amusement park for kids young and old.
Not only does this event benefit our dads, our bellies, and our families, but our indulgence is also for a good cause! The event is a supporter of Camp Bucko, a week-long camp which is open to young burn survivors between the ages of 7 and 17. The camp is facilitated through volunteers and generous donations made by firefighters associations around Ontario.
The event occurs rain or shine, so make sure to get your dad and family out to The Beach, BBQ and Brews festival in Woodbine Park from June 14th– 16th, 2013.
