St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) will mark one full year since Canada shut down because of the global pandemic. This pandemic hasn’t been easy for anyone but stay positive, cause there is light at the end of the tunnel. With news of some momentum (hopefully) for the vaccine rollout, and spring days on the horizon, there is plenty of reasons to enjoy this St. Patrick’s Day, even if its from the comfort of your own home.

For all you lucky readers, we have a great list of stouts, the perfect libation for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Each of these stouts have been produced from local Ontario Craft brewers and are available for delivery, right to your door, through their brewery website (links below!). Some stouts are also available through The Beer Store in your area. Now let’s get down to business – Here are the top stouts for St. Patrick’s Day 2021.

Divine Intervention Imperial Stout (ABV 11%)

Collective Arts Brewing in Collaboration with Indie Alehouse

Divine Intervention is a big, beautiful beer that’s absolutely loaded with real cacao, sourced from Toronto’s own SOMA Chocolatemaker, with chocolate fudge adding a rich sweetness. Chocolate lovers: get ready to treat yourself with this smooth, decadent brew. Divine Intervention is available now at the Collective Arts online shop, and its brewery retail stores in Toronto and Hamilton.

Chocolate Milk Stout (ABV 6.6%)

Wellington Brewery

This is a sweet and robust stout brewed with cocoa, lactose, roasted malts, and a touch of flaked oats. It has an inviting aroma of dark chocolate and silky-smooth unfiltered malt body making it a decadent treat after any meal. This brew was also the Bronze Winner at the Canadian Brewing Awards in 2020 for the category of Sweet Stout or Cream Stout and the Silver Winner in 2017 for the category of Milk Stout.

The Entire Ocean In A Drop XXX Stout (ABV 7.5%)

Muddy York Brewing Co.

To no one’s surprise, there is a lot going on here. The beer is big but doesn’t taste hot. The peanut butter comes off the nose predominantly, with banana making an appearance mid palate and mixing with a salty bacon savoury note. Huge body and big flavour. Like Elvis. This brew does contain peanuts so be sure to keep that in mind if you have any allergies.

April Stout (ABV 4%)

Burdock Brewery

This easy drinking, relatively dry stout is brewed with premium Ontario oats that according to the brewery are “so premium that we eat ‘em for breakfast.” They also say that this particular batch is balanced and clean; not quite as light as a dark lager but is most definitely lurking in the refreshing darkness zone. This brew also has notes of dark chocolate cake, light brown salted caramel, and fancy fruity 3rd wave drip coffee.

Brown Cow Nitro Stout (ABV 5.5%)

Calabogie Brewing Co.

The Cow Nitro Stout from Calabogie Brewing pours a beautiful cascade leaving a thick ice cream mocha head. The nose is brown sugar, vanilla beans, chocolate and espresso. Rich chocolate and slightly roasted flavours complement the big body and silky texture. This brew is available directly through Calabogie Brewing’s websiteor at The Beer Store.

Kensington It’s A Stout (ABV 5.8%)

Kensington Brewing Co.

It’s A Stout by Kensington Brewing Company is a delicious dark ale brewed with roasted cacao nibs which give it a baker’s chocolate vibe and roasted espresso aromas. This brew was a Gold Medal winner of the 2020 Ontario Brewing Awards and pairs well with frigid weather, windchills, and Netflix. Is there really a better way is there to enjoy the last few weeks of winter? You can purchase this brew now from Kensington Brewing Company’s website and at The Beer Store.

Stouty McStout Face (ABV 5.8%)

Sleeping Giant Brewing Co.

Brewed for St. Patrick’s Day, this Foreign Extra Stout is malt forward with a distinct roastiness and very little to no hop presence. Brewed with American Ale yeast, this Stout is full-bodied and will have a nice alcoholic warmth along with it. Its flavour profile is described as strong, bold, heavy, smooth mouthfeel.

Gamma Ray Imperial Coffee Stout (ABV 9.5%)

Signal Brewing Company

Gamma Ray blends five malts and a large quantity of oats to deliver a decadently deep and indulgent experience. A healthy dose of roasted coffee added to each batch brings out the beer’s dark chocolate flavors and enhances its drinkability. A luxuriously smooth mouthfeel is followed by full flavours of chocolate, liquorice and subtle notes of coffee. The finish is rich and satisfying with a lingering roasted bitterness. Despite its intensity, Gamma Rays fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel make it very smooth and surprisingly easy to drink.

Celestial Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 2020 (ABV 9.7%)

Bobcaygeon Brewing Company

Brewed in the Fall of 2019, the team at Bobcaygeon Brewing Company laid this tasty beer to rest in some Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels for over a year. During this time, the barrels contributed notes of vanilla, charred-oak and bourbon booziness that are a beautiful compliment to the dark chocolate, cherry and raspberry notes of the base beer.

Pouring a syrupy black with a dark brown head, this is a full-bodied beer for sipping and savouring. A perfect brew to enjoy during St. Patrick’s Day or cellared and enjoyed years down the road.

Paradise Found: Tropical Stout (ABV 5.8%)

Saulter Street Brewing Co.

With inspiration pulled from the West Indies this Tropical Stout inspires visions of warmer days with its sweet aroma and flavours of chocolate covered espresso beans from the roasted barley and added Demerara sugar. The perfect brew to cap off winter and get you excited for the brighter (and warmer) days ahead.
