The TekSavvy Tap Series with Saulter Street Brewery

Beer discovery is the most important part of Toronto’s Festival of Beer. We offer hundreds of brews to try: some you have heard of, and some maybe not. We have created the New Brews presented by TekSavvy programme to do two things: 1) Allow brewers who have never been to our event the chance to feature their product to the masses. 2) Allow beer lovers the chance to discover new brews.

As part of this programme, we will be rolling out information about each participating brewer throughout the month of June in a series we are calling the TekSavvy Tap Series, to help you get to know who our New Brews are! So, without further ado – here is Saulter Street Brewery:

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

Saulter Street Brewery was built for those whose lives move a little too fast. The brewery is a mini escape from the city within it. Our brewing process fuses traditional ingredients in unconventional combinations underlined by a great deal of patience, creating something that’s meaningful to us, and hopefully to you too. For us, this brewery was created with a lot of heart and passion for beer in the hopes to be a vehicle for meaningful moments, connections, and conversations.

What kind of beers will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will paint a picture of what they can expect?

Riverside Pilsner: 4.7% and 25 IBU

  • Our flagship Czech-style Pilsner is made from locally sourced small batch malts and Saaz hops to give it a spicy bite. Smooth and crisp, this copper-coloured, medium-bodied beer has been aged for twenty-eight days

Golden Ale: 5.5% and 60 IBU

  • A traditional English Style Ale using a new English hop, Olicana, which is made to resemble tropical flavoured hops from Australia and the Pacific Northwest. This golden coloured ale is crisp with bitter & earthy notes. Aroma of citrus zest, dried mango and apricot.

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

We cannot wait to pour our Pilsner and Golden Pale Ale at TFOB 2018! Other than the sunshine and live music, we are excited to introduce out beer and our brewery to all of Toronto! See you soon

Where can people find more information about your brewery, other brews you are making, etc?

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

I started home brewing in the early 2000’s, probably for the same reason most people do… to save a few bucks. I could not have been more wrong. 20L batches quickly gave way to 50L batches. That trend has continued to this day as we brew on a 10HL system at William Street Beer Co. in Cobourg. Our brewery brews primarily traditional North American and German styles with a focus on securing the best possible ingredients and utilizing traditional, proven processes.

All of our core brands are brewed with 100% Northumberland County Hops, brewed by Valley Hops in Port Hope.

What kind of beer(s) will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will help paint a picture of what they can expect?

William Street Beer Co. is very excited to present one of our Core Brands and one of our Seasonal.

Cliff Top Pale Ale is a 5.5% ABV North American Pale Ale which is brewed with 100% Northumberland County grown Magnum, Chinook and Cascade Hops.

Orange CreamCycle is a traditional Cream Ale which is unfused with orange zest and real vanilla to create an amazingly sweet and delicious summer experience.

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

As a small, regional brewery, we are excited to introduce the fruits of our labours to the Toronto market

Best Brews To Pair With Your Latest Netflix Series

Now that the dust has settled and the holidays are winding down, it’s back to the grind… and this means buckling down and keeping things low-key. If you didn’t get a chance to get caught up on your favourite Netflix series while you were off because you’re ‘uber’ popular and went to so many parties, you should have no problem doing so now. That’s why our staff has put together their recommendations for the best series on Netflix for you to watch.

To add a Toronto’s Festival of Beer twist, we’ve thrown in the brews our team thinks you should sample while watching them. Cheers to the new year from our TFOB family to yours!

Black Mirror

Black Mirror is sharp, suspenseful and even sometimes satirical drama that focuses on techno-paranoia. It’s has been referred to as the present day version of The Twilight Zone that is peppered with modern day influences and even sometimes futuristic theories. Once you start watching this show, you will be on the edge of your seat because every episode fully immerses you in the story and you can’t help but get drawn in. You will start asking yourself questions like “what if this happened in real life?” – it’s a brilliant show that has all the bells and whistles for a solid binge worthy series.

Davide’s Pick: Wellington Brewery – County Brown Ale

Since most of the episodes in this show take place in Britain, why not pair it with Wellington Brewery’s County Brown Ale. Inspired by traditional English brown ales, this delicious ale is a rich mahogany brown in colour with deep red accents. With roasted malt, nut, and toffee notes this enticing malt-forward ale is balanced with a mild hop finish. It’s also an award-winning brown ale that is a testament to the fact that the classics never go out of style.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a hilarious comedy about a police precinct in Brooklyn. The show mainly follows Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) but also includes an incredible supporting cast portrayed by the likes of Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Cruz, Jo Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher and many more.

Each character is a misfit in their own way but you quickly fall in love with each of them and their quirky shenanigans. The cast also has an incredible chemistry which makes this show one you should watch.

Stacey’s Brew Pick: Brickworks Ciderhouse – BATCH: 1904

Why: This refreshing cider is the perfect pairing for a comedy like Brooklyn Nine Nine. Ciders remind us all of the summer time and good fun so why not bring that familiar feeling to life while you have some fun watching these goofy characters shake up their precinct.

Dark

Dark is one of the newest dramas to fall under the Netflix original series catalogue. The show follows a similar setting to Stranger Things, but what’s cool about this show is that the story is written in an even darker way. The show takes place in a small town in Germany where a number of disappearances shock the town and strange things begin to happen that no one can explain.

Davide’s Brew Pick: The Napanee Beer Co. – Blacklist Black German Lager

Why: This beer is great because it encompasses a few different aspects that relate to this show. First and most obviously, is that it’s a German Lager and the show takes place in Germany. Second, it hails from the small town of Napanee Ontario which relates to the small town setting in the show. German Lagers are also slightly heavier which pairs perfectly with the dark ambiance that this show has from start to finish.

Mind Hunter

If you haven’t watched Mind Hunter yet and you’re into intense crime dramas like us, you need to get on this right away. The show takes place in the 1070s and follows a young FBI agent who becomes fascinated in learning how some of the most notorious criminals think. As you follow his character along, the show helps you understand the psychology of why these people commit such heinous crimes. The show is produced by David Fincher, who also directed legendary films like Seven and Fight Club, so you know you’re in for a story-line that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Jon’s Brew Pick: Labatt 50

Why: Labatt 50 is a staple beer from the 70s era which makes this a no-brainer to pair with this incredible show. Make sure you buy it in a stubby bottle though which will take you back to that time and give you the true feel of what a FBI agent would have been drinking as they delve in to the crimes that shook the time.

Master of None

Master of None is a very funny Netflix comedy that is written by actor and comedian Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang. The show is loosely based on Ansari’s real-life experiences.

Ansari plays the role of Dev, a New York-based actor who is struggling to identify what he really wants, both personally and professionally. The series also reveals glimpses of Dev’s younger years, and explores current aspects of his life, including modern etiquette through texting and social media, and being young and single in the big city.

Les’s Brew Pick: Guinness

Why: One of the many benefits of drinking Guinness is that it has been show to be good for your virility (Source). Since the show has a strong focus on Dev’s dating life, this might actually be the perfect beer for you to delve in to when understanding Dev’s character.

The 2018 edition of Toronto’s Festival of Beer presented by the Beer Store happens July 26 to 29 at Bandshell Park Exhibition Place. There will be hundreds of breweries, dozens of food choices and live entertainment each day. We also added a Thursday Night to our already legendary Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 4 days of glory! 5 Best Bets For Enjoying the Cottage Vibes At Spring Sessions

Spring Sessions of Toronto’s Festival of Beer happens on the May 2-4 Long Weekend at Fort York Garrison Common

Years ago I lost touch with my friend Mike. He had an awesome cottage in Muskoka that we crashed at every long weekend. It slept about 15 people, had a hot tub on the deck, a boat on a nice lake. Mike, I miss you man.

Every since we lost contact I’ve been trying to find a cure for my long weekend cottage needs. I can assume there are more people like me searching for that cottagey fix. That’s why we (the gang behind the legendary summer festival, Toronto’s Festival of Beer) created Spring Sessions. May Two Four Weekend, in the city.

Here are your 5 Best Bets (plus one bonus) for enjoying the Sesh’:

1) Live Music

I heard a friend of mine referred to Elliott Brood as Death Country music. That is so bad ass. The gents in Elliott Brood playing a live acoustic session right next to the campfire sounds like a perfect way to spend Saturday May 20. Then, the very next day, our pals in The Trews will play their very own Campfire Session on Sunday, May 21. This is like the absolute best-case scenario for a campfire cottage party, but instead of your one friend who picks up a guitar and only knows ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ – we hired pros: Elliott Brood and The Trews. Pick your day and use code SAVEFIVE to take $5 off your tickets.

Get SATURDAY Spring Sessions Tickets!

Get SUNDAY Spring Sessions Tickets!

Use code SAVEFIVE to save $5 off Tickets!

2) Bocce

Some reports stat that Bocce is the most played activity in the world. Thankfully Track & Field Bar has picked up on the trend and will be at Spring Sessions to host all your bocce needs. Bocce Standards Association rules apply. (Totally just made that rules part up. Apologies to those who are actually a part of the BSA. No disrespect homies.)

3) Let There Be Fire!

Hanging around a fire pit is pretty much mandatory. It’s like Rule 1 of the cottage: “If your clothes don’t smell like camp fire, were you actually even at the cottage, bro?” There may be marshmallows. Currently seeking approval from the people who make those marshmallow decisions. UPDATE: We have confirmed marshmallows. THERE WILL BE MARSHMALLOWS!

4) Cottage Vibes

Expect all the fixings of a cottage inside Fort York Garrison Common. Great beer, tasty food, your BFFs, and loads of games; like Giant Jenga. You see, it’s just like Jenga, but bigger, so be warned: if you decide to go ‘open toe’ with your footwear then a falling Jenga tower may be a hazard. Seriously.

5) Good Food

We hand selected and curated our favourite food purveyors and here’s a quick list of who will be there: Mustache Burger, Chimney Stax Baking Co, Ontario Corn Roasters, Oyster Boy, Tiny Toms, and Smoke’s Poutinerie. HERE’S the list.

BONUS BET: 6) Great Beer

Yes, there are only awesome Brewers at the ‘sesh. See the complete list HERE. Our recommendation is to take your time. Sample it, don’t just drank it all down. Brewers work super hard to craft each brew. This is their life work. Enjoy it… and as always, please sample responsibly.

There you go. Some tips from us to you. Here’s a video to get a taste from last year…

About Method Man & Redman:

Method Man & Redman (A.K.A Red & Mef, Mef & Red, Mr. Mef and Funk Doc or Funk Doc and Johnny Blaze), are a hip-hop duo, composed of rappers Method Man (of Wu-Tang Clan) and Redman (of Def Squad). They are signed to Def Jam Recordings as the duo as well as solo artists. While they had been collaborating since 1994, it was not until 1999 that they released a full-length collaborative effort, Blackout!. The follow-up album, Blackout! 2, was released in 2009.

Method Man often gives a shout out to Redman on tracks that do not feature Redman; this usually comes in the form of “What up, Doc!” referring to Redman’s alias “Funk Doctor Spock”. In 2001, they both starred together in the comedy/stoner movie titled “How High”. The duo have both said a sequel will be released in late 2017.

The duo have known each other long before signing with Def Jam. While at Def Jam, they reunited in 1994 on tour and met again in 1995 in the recording studio of the late Tupac Shakur. They recorded “Got My Mind Made Up” for Shakur’s multi-platinum album “All Eyez On Me”. After this they had friendly battles freestyling with each other on Yo! MTV Raps! which ultimately led to their collaborative debut single How High In 1999, the two rappers appeared together on “Rap Phenomenon” along side with The Notorious B.I.G on his posthumous album “Born Again”

On May 7, 2009, in promotion for their second studio album, Method Man & Redman released a mixtape titled Lights Out, which was hosted by DJ Green Latern. In 2013, Method Man and Redman previewed a new track called “Lookin’ Fly Too” featuring Ehikmostz. They continue to record together with both eyeing careers beyond DefJam.

In 2014, Method Man put out his 5th studio album titled Meth Lab. His next studio album called Crystal Meth is scheduled to drop in 2017. Redman put out the “Muddy Waters 2 Mixtape” in 2013, and then in 2015 his album Mudface.

About Saukrates:

Saukrates is a Canadian rapper, singer, and record producer. He is the co-founder of Capitol Hill Music, and lead singer of the hip-hop/R&B group Big Black Lincoln. He is also a member of Redman’s Gilla House collective.

Saukrates arrived on the hip-hop scene of the early-nineties, a post-native tongues rapper and producer who pioneered the Canadian hip-hop scene. About Elliott Brood:

Elliott BROOD’s brand of fuzzed-up roots music makes for captivating, frenetic performances, which also translates on the band’s acclaimed records. Elliott BROOD has won a Juno, been nominated for Genie Award and hit the Polaris Short List. Their style has been called everything from ‘blackgrass’ to ‘death country,’ but those descriptions don’t capture the transcendent heights of their unique approach to roots music. Work and Love, their most recent and most personal album to date, is the sound of a grown-up band searching their hearts for all they’ve lost and gained. They are presently in studio working on the follow up  album Ghost Gardens which is set for release in the Fall of 2017.

About The Trews:

The Trews are a Canadian hard rock band from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, consisting of vocalist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Gavin Maguire. The band is currently based in Toronto, Ontario.

The band started their career with the name One I’d Trouser, a line taken from a song in Monty Python’s “The Meaning Of Life”. They changed their name to Trouser, and eventually The Trews. They released an EP as One I’d Trouser, and a second EP under the name The Trews.

In the early summer of 2002 the band entered Rocksearch, a high-profile contest that is held annually by CHTZ-FM, a St. Catharines (Southern Ontario) rock radio station. Winning the contest would prove to be their big break as they soon landed a recording contract with Bumstead Productions Ltd.

Since then, the band has released five studio albums, three live albums, one compilation album, and five EPs. The Trews have also won a number of awards for their work, including: Seven East Coast Music Awards (ECMA), Three Independant Music Awards (US), and Five Juno Award nominations.
