The TekSavvy Tap Series with GoodLot Farm & GoodLot Farmstead Brewing Co

Newbrews-Brewer_GoodLot

Beer discovery is the most important part of Toronto’s Festival of Beer. We offer hundreds of brews to try: some you have heard of, and some maybe not. We have created the New Brews presented by TekSavvy programme to do two things: 1) Allow brewers who have never been to our event the chance to feature their product to the masses. 2) Allow beer lovers the chance to discover new brews.

As part of this programme, we will be rolling out information about each participating brewer throughout the month of June in a series we are calling the TekSavvy Tap Series, to help you get to know who our New Brews are! So, without further ado – here is Goodlot Farm & Goodlot Farmstead Brewing Co:

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

Gail and Phil established GoodLot Farm in Caledon in 2010 (originally as Winterbrook Hops), supplying fresh organic Ontario hops to great craft brewers across the Province.

In 2016, we changed our name to better reflect our land and community, and launched GoodLot Farm and Farmstead Brewing Company.

In 2017, we became the first farm-to-barrel brewery in the Greenbelt, featuring fresh, hyper-local beer using ingredients raised on our own farm, and those of neighbouring farms. Our new on-farm brewery is a natural extension of our organic farm practice.

We embrace a holistic approach to agriculture to produce quality, nutrient-dense ingredients. Our beer, inspired by the Headwaters and Greenbelt region, embodies our values to protect our water, promote soil health and biodiversity, and whole-heartedly support our community in everything we do.

What kind of beers will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will paint a picture of what they can expect?

We are bringing GoodLot Farmstead Ale (GoodLot Farm Pale Ale)  – our first release is a smooth golden pale ale with tropical and stone fruit flavours, featuring our organic Cascade and Nugget hops, along with hops from two other Ontario hop farms – Tavistock Hops and Clear Valley Hops.

This beer is a 100% Ontario Hops BrewON gold label beer. GoodLot Farmstead Ale has a soft body, with a sweet honey backbone. Not excessively bitter, with notes of pineapple, apricot, lychee and tangerine. Easy drinking, yet incredibly flavourful.    6.2% ABV / 38 IBU

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

TFOB is such a great and legendary event – one of the oldest and premier craft beer events of the year.  Between the great music and people, it is a great place to enjoy and support your favourite local breweries.   Participating in the new brewery tent is going to be so much fun, and we cant wait to meet the people and try the beer from other new Ontario craft breweries hanging in the tent.

Where can people find more information about your brewery, other brews you are making, etc?

Great questions. www.GoodLot.Beer  is a good place to start.  We will be opening the farm and our solar powered brewery to the public this summer, so come up and learn more while you drink beer and wander the hop yard in the beautiful Greenbelt and  Headwaters region of Caledon, ON.

Make sure you check out the New Brews presented by TekSavvy on-site at TFOB 2018. There will be 12 brewers showcasing the fruits of their labour, along with free WiFi for beer lovers to share their discoveries.  We will feature each brewer leading up to TFOB 2018. And yes, the New Brews presented by TekSavvy pavilion will be on-site for all four days of TFOB.

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

My story of becoming a brewer is an unusual one. While I was teaching overseas in Southern Asia, the city that I was living in had become a dry city. The mayor at the time had ordered for every bar and pub to be shut down. Me and a fried of mine, who both had a bit of brewing experience, decided to open up a little “hangout” for our friend and have fresh beer brewed available. We rented out a spot above a bustling night market and began brewing. Our little hangout got fairly popular and turned into somewhat of a speakeasy brewpub. For legal reasons we decided to move the business to Taipei where we could operate a little more legitimately. I then moved home to Canada to open my own brewery.

What kind of beers will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will paint a picture of what they can expect?

We will be bringing our Amber 66 and our Proper English with us. I’ve attached two flyers below with a description of the beer and the tasting notes.

Amber 66

This well-balanced European-style amber ale is the flagship to our Heritage Series. Reminiscent of our time as an early nation, we have held true to the big bodied, high ABV ales that were very popular among the hard working men and women who helped Canada become what it is today.

It is full bodied with a complex malt profile. Velvety and subtle. Notes of rye bread, cherry, and toast, with a warm highland whiskey finish. A true old-world ale.

Proper English

Vintage a vintage gets. This 150-year-old Extra Special Bitter recipe uses ingredients brought over from England by the United Empire Loyalists and still grown locally today. The simple complexity of this brilliant, golden ale recaptures a time of shared purpose and honest reward.

Earthy and slightly floral on the nose with notes of Sauvignon blanc. A malty, biscuit and pie-crust body. Hints of hazelnut and caramel with a crisp, dry finish.

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

Beer festivals are always fun. It’s great meeting new people in the industry along with other brewers and of course it’s always fun to meet some new fans of our products.

Where can people find more information about your brewery, other brews you are making, etc?

More information about what we are all about can be found on our website www.skeletonpark.ca and on our social media pages; Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

Midtown founded by Paul Spike Lees and Mark Andrewsky as a Craft Brewery, Restaurant, Public house and Market in the center of wellington is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, good times and traditional beer styles, One of the few breweries in the area with a focus on traditional cask conditioned ales.

PSL Head Brewer; I started brewing with kits bought from the local pharmacy as a school science experiment, in buckets, in the kitchen aged 14  and Ive just kept going.   The more I learn the more i realize how much i don’t know.

I’m always amazed when the wort runs clear and the ferment take off and beer actually comes out of a bright tank. The thing i love the most is that ultimately this is a natural process thats been around in one form or another for thousands of years.

I feel that the process of making beer in traditional styles connects me directly with the social history of brewers, regions, people and cultures.

What kind of beers will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will paint a picture of what they can expect?

Extra Special Bitter (ESB)

Based on the classic unfiltered Extra Special Bitter, this beer has a medium Body with a clean dry finish, Its flavour profile is a balanced malt sweetness against the hop bittering. The hop profile is low

On the palate it shows caramel notes with a nutty middle and has dark stone fruits and a jamminess on the finish. The finish is accented at cellar drinking temperature 10-12C, while still maintaining a clean caramel and nutty character at lower serving temperatures.

KOLSCH

This is a Canadian twist on the classic German Beer interplays lower levels of bittering hops accentuating the Pilsner malt and the earthy character from the wheat malt, creating a clean crisp easy drinking beer with a dry finish and a pleasant peach apricot aromas.

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

Participating in TFOB its Midtown Brewing Company’s first venture out to a festival on this scale, Its always a pleasure to mingle with your pear group and try new brews and compare notes. you always learn something new as well as getting the opportunity to introduce our brews to new folks

The TekSavvy Tap Series with William Street Beer Co.

What made you want to become a brewer? Tell your story!

I started home brewing in the early 2000’s, probably for the same reason most people do… to save a few bucks. I could not have been more wrong. 20L batches quickly gave way to 50L batches. That trend has continued to this day as we brew on a 10HL system at William Street Beer Co. in Cobourg. Our brewery brews primarily traditional North American and German styles with a focus on securing the best possible ingredients and utilizing traditional, proven processes.

All of our core brands are brewed with 100% Northumberland County Hops, brewed by Valley Hops in Port Hope.

What kind of beer(s) will you be bringing to TFOB 2018? If you have tasting notes that you could share with fans, it will help paint a picture of what they can expect?

William Street Beer Co. is very excited to present one of our Core Brands and one of our Seasonal.

Cliff Top Pale Ale is a 5.5% ABV North American Pale Ale which is brewed with 100% Northumberland County grown Magnum, Chinook and Cascade Hops.

Orange CreamCycle is a traditional Cream Ale which is unfused with orange zest and real vanilla to create an amazingly sweet and delicious summer experience.

What are you most excited about participating at TFOB 2018?

As a small, regional brewery, we are excited to introduce the fruits of our labours to the Toronto market

Best Brews To Pair With Your Latest Netflix Series

59ea203910513.image

Now that the dust has settled and the holidays are winding down, it’s back to the grind… and this means buckling down and keeping things low-key. If you didn’t get a chance to get caught up on your favourite Netflix series while you were off because you’re ‘uber’ popular and went to so many parties, you should have no problem doing so now. That’s why our staff has put together their recommendations for the best series on Netflix for you to watch.

To add a Toronto’s Festival of Beer twist, we’ve thrown in the brews our team thinks you should sample while watching them. Cheers to the new year from our TFOB family to yours!

Black Mirror

Black Mirror is sharp, suspenseful and even sometimes satirical drama that focuses on techno-paranoia. It’s has been referred to as the present day version of The Twilight Zone that is peppered with modern day influences and even sometimes futuristic theories. Once you start watching this show, you will be on the edge of your seat because every episode fully immerses you in the story and you can’t help but get drawn in. You will start asking yourself questions like “what if this happened in real life?” – it’s a brilliant show that has all the bells and whistles for a solid binge worthy series.

Davide’s Pick: Wellington Brewery – County Brown Ale

Since most of the episodes in this show take place in Britain, why not pair it with Wellington Brewery’s County Brown Ale. Inspired by traditional English brown ales, this delicious ale is a rich mahogany brown in colour with deep red accents. With roasted malt, nut, and toffee notes this enticing malt-forward ale is balanced with a mild hop finish. It’s also an award-winning brown ale that is a testament to the fact that the classics never go out of style.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a hilarious comedy about a police precinct in Brooklyn. The show mainly follows Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) but also includes an incredible supporting cast portrayed by the likes of Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Cruz, Jo Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher and many more.

Each character is a misfit in their own way but you quickly fall in love with each of them and their quirky shenanigans. The cast also has an incredible chemistry which makes this show one you should watch.

Stacey’s Brew Pick: Brickworks Ciderhouse – BATCH: 1904

Why: This refreshing cider is the perfect pairing for a comedy like Brooklyn Nine Nine. Ciders remind us all of the summer time and good fun so why not bring that familiar feeling to life while you have some fun watching these goofy characters shake up their precinct.

Dark

Dark is one of the newest dramas to fall under the Netflix original series catalogue. The show follows a similar setting to Stranger Things, but what’s cool about this show is that the story is written in an even darker way. The show takes place in a small town in Germany where a number of disappearances shock the town and strange things begin to happen that no one can explain.

Davide’s Brew Pick: The Napanee Beer Co. – Blacklist Black German Lager

Why: This beer is great because it encompasses a few different aspects that relate to this show. First and most obviously, is that it’s a German Lager and the show takes place in Germany. Second, it hails from the small town of Napanee Ontario which relates to the small town setting in the show. German Lagers are also slightly heavier which pairs perfectly with the dark ambiance that this show has from start to finish.

Mind Hunter

If you haven’t watched Mind Hunter yet and you’re into intense crime dramas like us, you need to get on this right away. The show takes place in the 1070s and follows a young FBI agent who becomes fascinated in learning how some of the most notorious criminals think. As you follow his character along, the show helps you understand the psychology of why these people commit such heinous crimes. The show is produced by David Fincher, who also directed legendary films like Seven and Fight Club, so you know you’re in for a story-line that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Jon’s Brew Pick: Labatt 50

Why: Labatt 50 is a staple beer from the 70s era which makes this a no-brainer to pair with this incredible show. Make sure you buy it in a stubby bottle though which will take you back to that time and give you the true feel of what a FBI agent would have been drinking as they delve in to the crimes that shook the time.

Master of None

Master of None is a very funny Netflix comedy that is written by actor and comedian Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang. The show is loosely based on Ansari’s real-life experiences.

Ansari plays the role of Dev, a New York-based actor who is struggling to identify what he really wants, both personally and professionally. The series also reveals glimpses of Dev’s younger years, and explores current aspects of his life, including modern etiquette through texting and social media, and being young and single in the big city.

Les’s Brew Pick: Guinness

Why: One of the many benefits of drinking Guinness is that it has been show to be good for your virility (Source). Since the show has a strong focus on Dev’s dating life, this might actually be the perfect beer for you to delve in to when understanding Dev’s character.

The 2018 edition of Toronto’s Festival of Beer presented by the Beer Store happens July 26 to 29 at Bandshell Park Exhibition Place. There will be hundreds of breweries, dozens of food choices and live entertainment each day. We also added a Thursday Night to our already legendary Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 4 days of glory!
