1) Mustache Burger:

If you find yourself drinking a Canadian-made brew on the May Two Four Long Weekend, just make sure you have a Canadian-made Mustache Burger to accompany it. It doesn’t get more Canadian than that. Unless of course you were sharing your burger with a Mountie. If you haven’t tried a Mustache Burger yet, get excited friends. Spring Sessions is almost here.

2) Chimney Stax Baking Co.:

May Two-Four Chimney Stax FoodChimney Stax create giant towers of doughy goodness. Fresh-made, rotisserie-baked bread served sweet or savoury. They can be shared, but really… who do you even like that much to share these awesome treats with?

3) Ontario Corn Roasters:

May Two-Four Corn-on-the-cob FoodThe maestros of roasting corn are back. The smell of roasting corn is scientifically proven to make you a better person. It’s science. Food that comes with its own handle is pretty much the best thing ever. Mother nature approved!

4) Oyster Boy:

If you’ve never tried Oyster Boy, you must be shucking out of your mind. Oysters pair perfectly with pretty much every beer at Spring Sessions. Trust us, we‘re experts.

5) Tiny Toms:

May Two-Four Donuts FoodThe legend of Tiny Toms grow with every beer event. Like, one time: Tiny Toms doughnuts saved a man’s life. (Not really, but I had fun typing that) Get your hot little hands on these hot little doughnuts and wash it down with a cool brew and your pretty much living the dream.

6) Smoke’s Poutinerie:

May Two-Four Poutine FoodPoutine is almost a food group now, so we had to have these legends at Spring Sessions. There is nothing I could write that hasn’t been said already about Poutine. Little known fact: Poutine literally translates to ‘awesome stuff in my belly’. True story.

There you have it. If these food choices don’t make you a wee bit hungry, then I’m sorry to say that you have no soul. See you on the May Long Weekend!

5 Best Bets For Enjoying the Cottage Vibes At Spring Sessions

BeerFest(SpringSession)_292

Spring Sessions of Toronto’s Festival of Beer happens on the May 2-4 Long Weekend at Fort York Garrison Common

Years ago I lost touch with my friend Mike. He had an awesome cottage in Muskoka that we crashed at every long weekend. It slept about 15 people, had a hot tub on the deck, a boat on a nice lake. Mike, I miss you man.

Every since we lost contact I’ve been trying to find a cure for my long weekend cottage needs. I can assume there are more people like me searching for that cottagey fix. That’s why we (the gang behind the legendary summer festival, Toronto’s Festival of Beer) created Spring Sessions. May Two Four Weekend, in the city.

Here are your 5 Best Bets (plus one bonus) for enjoying the Sesh’:

1) Live Music

I heard a friend of mine referred to Elliott Brood as Death Country music. That is so bad ass. The gents in Elliott Brood playing a live acoustic session right next to the campfire sounds like a perfect way to spend Saturday May 20. Then, the very next day, our pals in The Trews will play their very own Campfire Session on Sunday, May 21. This is like the absolute best-case scenario for a campfire cottage party, but instead of your one friend who picks up a guitar and only knows ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ – we hired pros: Elliott Brood and The Trews. Pick your day and use code SAVEFIVE to take $5 off your tickets.

Get SATURDAY Spring Sessions Tickets!

Get SUNDAY Spring Sessions Tickets!

Use code SAVEFIVE to save $5 off Tickets!

2) Bocce

Some reports stat that Bocce is the most played activity in the world. Thankfully Track & Field Bar has picked up on the trend and will be at Spring Sessions to host all your bocce needs. Bocce Standards Association rules apply. (Totally just made that rules part up. Apologies to those who are actually a part of the BSA. No disrespect homies.)

3) Let There Be Fire!

Hanging around a fire pit is pretty much mandatory. It’s like Rule 1 of the cottage: “If your clothes don’t smell like camp fire, were you actually even at the cottage, bro?” There may be marshmallows. Currently seeking approval from the people who make those marshmallow decisions. UPDATE: We have confirmed marshmallows. THERE WILL BE MARSHMALLOWS!

4) Cottage Vibes

Expect all the fixings of a cottage inside Fort York Garrison Common. Great beer, tasty food, your BFFs, and loads of games; like Giant Jenga. You see, it’s just like Jenga, but bigger, so be warned: if you decide to go ‘open toe’ with your footwear then a falling Jenga tower may be a hazard. Seriously.

5) Good Food

We hand selected and curated our favourite food purveyors and here’s a quick list of who will be there: Mustache Burger, Chimney Stax Baking Co, Ontario Corn Roasters, Oyster Boy, Tiny Toms, and Smoke’s Poutinerie. HERE’S the list.

BONUS BET: 6) Great Beer

Yes, there are only awesome Brewers at the ‘sesh. See the complete list HERE. Our recommendation is to take your time. Sample it, don’t just drank it all down. Brewers work super hard to craft each brew. This is their life work. Enjoy it… and as always, please sample responsibly.

There you go. Some tips from us to you. Here’s a video to get a taste from last year…

MTV Raps! which ultimately led to their collaborative debut single How High In 1999, the two rappers appeared together on “Rap Phenomenon” along side with The Notorious B.I.G on his posthumous album “Born Again”

On May 7, 2009, in promotion for their second studio album, Method Man & Redman released a mixtape titled Lights Out, which was hosted by DJ Green Latern. In 2013, Method Man and Redman previewed a new track called “Lookin’ Fly Too” featuring Ehikmostz. They continue to record together with both eyeing careers beyond DefJam.

He has been awarded multiple Juno nominations for Best Rap Recording and through his career has collaborated with the likes of Drake, Nelly Furtado, Nas, Common, Redman, and Xzibit to name a few.

A fixture in the top-tiers of the Canadian hip-hop scene, he is present as a rapper, singer or producer on almost every Canadian major label hip-hop release over the past 20 years. Providing the likes of K-os, Swollen Members, Jully Black, Rascalz, Kardinal Offishal, and Choclair with his unique style of production that has become synonymous with the Torontonian hip-hop sound. About Alan Doyle & The Beautiful Gypsies:

Alan Doyle is an actor, producer, newly-minted best-selling author, and best known as lead singer for Newfoundland’s beloved Great Big Sea. He hails from Petty Harbour, NL, and formed Great Big Sea in 1993 with Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and Darrell Power, in which they fused traditional Newfoundland music with their own pop sensibilities. Their nine albums, double-disc hits retrospective, and two DVD releases have been declared Gold or Platinum and have sold a combined 1.2 million copies in Canada.

Alan Doyle & The Beautiful Gypsies is Doyle’s solo project and is equally adept to drawing a crowd.  They recently released their second album So Let’s Go in January 2015, which continues to cement Doyle’s reputation as one of Canada’s most treasured musicians and storytellers.

About David James:

Award winning country artist David James (MDM Recordings Inc. / Universal Music Canada) lives by the motto “nothing worth having comes easy and opportunity looks a lot like hard work,” and work hard he does.

With his debut performance at Boots and Hearts this past summer, a new EP Songs About A Girl, and two 2016 Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) Award™ nominations in the Rising Star and Recording Package of the Year categories, this Winnipeg native has been busy mapping out his musical trajectory.

Continuing a year of many exciting moments, he also received his first (2016) 19th Annual Canadian Radio Music Award nomination for Best New Group or Solo Artist: Country.

Showing no signs of slowing down, he was recently back in the studio, recording new music.  James will release a new single, “What If I Don’t”, as well as hit the road opening shows for Chad Brownlee in early 2017.

About Eric Ethridge:

Canadian country newcomer Eric Ethridge has gained a serious amount of momentum since he released a series of orchestra country-pop music videos back January 2015; one of which garnered him a mention in rolling stone magazine.

Subsequently his social media presence enjoyed a drastic increase with over 250,000 Youtube hits and an increase to over 1400 YouTube subscribers.

In August of 2015 Ethridge was the runner-up in the Boots and Hearts emerging artist showcase, and has since had continued interest from both American and Canadian record labels, and is now one of the newest additions to the Feldman’s Agency roster.

In early 2016 Ethridge was selected by a panel of industry professionals from across Canada to be one of the top 6 finalist for the CCMA Discovery Program, which then went on to win the CCMA Discovery Award. He has shared the stage with major  acts such as Jess Moskaluke, Brett Kissel, Emerson Drive, Chad Brownlee, The Bros. Osborne, Randy Houser, Chris Young, Billy Currington, Thomas Rhett, Kip Moore, Eric Church and Florida Georgia Line.

Ethridge is currently working with several producers: Jeff Coplan (Love & Theft, Tim Hicks, Black Jack Billy) , Todd Clarke (Phillip Phillips, Autumn Hill, Madeline Merlo), and Brian Howes (Nickelback, Keith Urban, Chris Daughtry, and Hinder) to develop his sound for his debut EP to be released in Early 2017.

About Dani Strong:

Dani Strong is a singer/songwriter with an unparalleled stage presence. Her debut album, Time To Breathe has already hit #1 on the country charts and #2 over all genres at iTunes! The new album is brewing a buzz about Strong, who is blazing her trail as an independent artist in both Canada and south of the border as well.
Not only is Strong an exceptional songwriter, but she is also a captivating performer with incredible depth and charm.  Feeding off of her audience she can win over any room with her brilliant wit and clever humour or simply dominate the stage with an absolutely haunting execution of one of her emotional pieces.

Strong’s story is one of dedication, heart, loss and triumph.  It has not been a short and paved road to where she is now.  Strong has learned, first hand, what it means to “pay your dues” and earn the respect of seasoned musicians, industry representatives and music fans alike. Strong’s story is unique and her talent as a songwriter and performer are exceptional and captivating.

About Elliott Brood:

Elliott BROOD’s brand of fuzzed-up roots music makes for captivating, frenetic performances, which also translates on the band’s acclaimed records. Elliott BROOD has won a Juno, been nominated for Genie Award and hit the Polaris Short List. Their style has been called everything from ‘blackgrass’ to ‘death country,’ but those descriptions don’t capture the transcendent heights of their unique approach to roots music. Work and Love, their most recent and most personal album to date, is the sound of a grown-up band searching their hearts for all they’ve lost and gained. They are presently in studio working on the follow up  album Ghost Gardens which is set for release in the Fall of 2017.

About The Trews:

The Trews are a Canadian hard rock band from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, consisting of vocalist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Gavin Maguire. The band is currently based in Toronto, Ontario.

The band started their career with the name One I’d Trouser, a line taken from a song in Monty Python’s “The Meaning Of Life”. They changed their name to Trouser, and eventually The Trews. They released an EP as One I’d Trouser, and a second EP under the name The Trews.

In the early summer of 2002 the band entered Rocksearch, a high-profile contest that is held annually by CHTZ-FM, a St. Catharines (Southern Ontario) rock radio station. Winning the contest would prove to be their big break as they soon landed a recording contract with Bumstead Productions Ltd.

Since then, the band has released five studio albums, three live albums, one compilation album, and five EPs. The Trews have also won a number of awards for their work, including: Seven East Coast Music Awards (ECMA), Three Independant Music Awards (US), and Five Juno Award nominations.
