We hear it every year. ‘The food at your event is amazing’. The feedback we get about the food is vital because we know how important it is to pair our vast selection of beer offerings with great food.  In fact, the President of Toronto’s Festival of Beer (his name is Les) is a serious foodie. He’s always talking about new restaurants, great chefs, and unique dining experiences. Seriously, he is always talking about it. (like maybe even a little too much, but he is the president so we go along with it) *Remember to get the intern to delete this line later*

5 Best Bets For Enjoying the Cottage In the City 2016

may-2-4-events-toronto-beer-festival-2016

Please note: This content is from 2016.

Spring Sessions Happen on the May 2-4 Long Weekend in Toronto

Years ago I lost touch with my friend Mike. He had an awesome cottage in Muskoka that we crashed at every long weekend. It slept about 15 people, had a hot tub on the deck, a boat on a nice lake. Mike, I miss you man.

Every since we lost contact I’ve been trying to find a cure for my long weekend cottage needs. I can assume there are more people like me searching for that cottagey fix. That’s why we (the gang behind the legendary summer festival, Toronto’s Festival of Beer) created Spring Sessions. May Two Four Weekend, in the city.

Here are your 5 Best Bets for enjoying the Sesh’:

1) Bocce

Some reports stat that Bocce is the most played activity in the world. Thankfully

Track & Field Bar has picked up on the trend and will be at Spring Sessions to host all your bocce needs. Bocce Standards Association rules apply. (Totally just made that rules part up. Apologies to those who are actually a part of the BSA. No disrespect homies.)

2) Let There Be Fire!

Hanging around a fire pit is pretty much mandatory. It’s like Rule 1 of the cottage: “If your clothes don’t smell like camp fire, were you actually even at the cottage, bro?” There may be marshmallows. Currently seeking approval from the people who make those marshmallow decisions.

3) Giant Jenga

Picture Jenga, but bigger. Just be warned: if you decide to go ‘open toe’ with your footwear then a falling Jenga tower may be a hazard. Seriously.

4) Good Food

We hand selected and curated our favourite food purveyors and here’s a quick list of who will be there: Ted’s World Famous BBQ. Chimney Stax. Ontario Corn Roasters. Pie Commission. Oyster Boy.Mama Raty’s Meat Pies. Tiny Toms. Smoke’s Poutinerie. HERE’S a blog about all of our food choices and why they are most excellent.

5) Great Beer

Yes, there are only awesome Brewers at the ‘sesh. See the complete list HERE. Our recommendation is to take your time. Sample it, don’t just drink it. Brewers work super hard to craft each brew. This is their life work. Enjoy it… and as always, please sample responsibly.

Hope to see you on the May Long Weekend!

5 Irish beer to try this St. Patrick’s Day

no thumb

Screen Shot 2015-03-14 at 12.42.58 AM Screen Shot 2015-03-14 at 12.43.11 AM IMG_0504

As Irish luck might have it, last fall Les Murray, president of TFOB and I got the opportunity to head over to Dublin for the Irish Craft Beer & Cider Festival. We brought 6 different Ontario brews with us and showcased them to excited Dubliners, while also enjoying some Irish brews ourselves!

With St Patrick’s Day around the corner, I’ve been thinking about all of the great beer we tried on that trip, and I thought I’d share some of my faves from it that you can get right here in Toronto!

Good news: They’re so good that we’re also working on bringing them over to showcase in the Irish Beer Pavilion at Toronto’s Festival of Beer this July. So even if the taps run dry this St. Patrick’s Day, we’ve got you covered.

  1. O’Hara’s BrewingIrish Stout

This baby is brewed in Carlow, Ireland, right near Kilkenny. The brewery does a variety of different styles, seasonals and one-offs but the Irish Stout has got to be my favourite. Luckily enough, it is available in the LCBO riiiight by my house.

  1. Brú BreweryBrú Rua

The Brú Rua from Brú Brewery, that only opened in 2013 in County Meath, has already made its way across to us! A hearty Irish Red ale made using Irish Malt and all-natural Irish Ingredients. Pop by Betty’s for a taste!

  1. McGargle’s Irish Family Brewers

And a family they are! Each beer from this brewery is dedicated to a specific and wacky member of the family. You can find “Granny Mary’s Red Ale,” “Knock Knock Ned’s IPA,” “Uncle Jim’s Stout,” “Cousin Rosie’s Pale Ale,” and “Fancy Frank Lager”… Some of the fam will be at Toronto’s Festival of Beer, but in the meantime grab the taster at An Sibin Pub in Riverside and give the whole family a whirl.

  1. Hercules Brewing – Yardsman Lager

Representing Northern Ireland on this list, Hercules Brewing was the first craft brewery to open in Northern Ireland over 160 years ago. They have since re-opened, re-vamped and started to produce beer yet again! Their Yardsman Lager pays homage to Irish men who worked in the mills of Ireland; and while you can’t get it in Toronto yet, it will soon be on a plane over to Toronto’s Festival of Beer, so you can at least get excited.

  1. Kilkenny – Irish Cream Ale

Made at the Guinness Brewery. Who would have known? Guinness steals the St. Patrick’s Day spotlight, but don’t forget this other gem they brew. Creamy, oh so creamy.

Other honourable mentions…but you’ll have to hop on a plane to try them:

  1. Franciscan Well – Rebel Red

  2. Hilden Brewery – Headless Dog

  3. The Porterhouse Brewing Co. – Plain Porter

  4. Dan Kelly’s Irish Cider
